Q: Is it necessary to have a hysterectomy if all I need is a cycstocele repair and support to the urethra? (J.)
A: It is difficult to answer this question without a proper evaluation and examination of your symptoms and signs. If indeed there is no other problem involved with the uterus and all that is prolapsed or herniated is the bladder then in general no hysterectomy would be necessary in that situation. Often times multiple pelvic organ prolapse is present, therefore a proper work up and plan is necessary to avoid multiple surgeries and postoperative problems and complications. Cystocele repair depends on many different factors such as patient’s age, degree of the prolapsed, and other co-existing medical conditions. Synthetic materials could be used as well as one’s own tissues depending on their health and strength. Almost all of these procedures are done as an outpatient and they are roughly short procedures with little to no down time.
