Q: What is the worst that can happen if a cycstocele and a rectocele are left untreated? They already seem to be at their worst phase but I am reluctant to have a medical procedure. (T.G)
A: Cycstocele and rectocele are displacement and sagging of the bladder and rectum respectively. They usually show themselves with symptoms such as incomplete emptying and urinary retention, protruding of a soft bulge through the birth canal, difficulty and pain during intercourse or even at rest, vaginal bleeding and ulcerations of the protruding bulge, sensation of incomplete defecation and the need to digitally reduce the bulges to be able to urinate or to move bowel. As mentioned previously if left untreated, life threatening complications are relatively rare but there is significant decrease in the quality of life. Many different office and out patients procedures could be offered to treat these conditions after proper work up is conducted. These are often times minimally invasive and short in duration. Recovery is usually fast and overall they are very safe procedures in expert hands.
